Fr. Francis De Sales
Congregation of Fransalians (MSFS)
In June 1995 the congregation of Fransalians (MSFS) in Pune ventured into the ministry to street children and rag pickers of Bombay and New Bombay. Fr. Francis Mulackal initiated contacts with street children in the railway stations, bus depots and on the streets. It gradually became one of the activities of the Pune Province of MSFS. Fr. Mulackal realized that the children need loving support and guidance to grow as human persons.

The necessity to offer a shelter to these children, felt by the people gathered on street children’s issues, led to the creation of a public trust, Jan Vikas Society, in 1996.

A rehabilitation home started in a small flat in Koperkhairne, near Vashi (Navi Mumbai). Thanks to various supports, a plot of land was purchased by the trust. Mermier Bal Ashram, the main host house, was constructed in 2000.  Owing to the growing number of  children seeking shelter, another home has opened in Taloja in 2003, Florin Bal Ashram. The strength of the children amounts to 74 in both the centers together.

The rehabilitation centers are not  the only  solution. The children needing help and support are of different nature and with different visions and attitudes. In order to help them, six day care centers have been opened in different areas of Navi Mumbai and Mumbai (Turbhe-Store, Indiranagar-Turbhe, Panvel, Mankhurd, Koperkhairne Village and Turbhe Naka). The children can spend the day in these centers and they are provided one meal per day with the help of Ratnanidhi Charitable Society.
